Firstborn

Firstborn from Jesper Kirkeby Brevik on Vimeo.

short film about two brothers with a rather tense relationship in their weird struggle over a trivial family heirloom.
the tension in this film is really intense and there is NO DIALOGUE AT ALL. i feel that this is something i could use in my production as i like the awkwardness that is created by it and the emotion that is bottled up creates verisimilitude, the audience can relate.

artificial unintelligence

The comedy aspect of this film was good however it was not filmed particularly well however the lot is more substantial than that of the first film amnesia .

the man who tried to kill cinema

i like that this short film is film noir inspired as the look of the movie is important particularly in shorts
the relevance of subject matter makes it almost ironic which gives a double stranded context to the film and adds interest .

amnesia

the filming is really nice in this film however the stylistic aspect and soundtrack are the only substance it holds as it has little or no plotline a definate "student film"

hybrid genre's

Many films fit into several genre categories ie they have a different genre style in format, setting, theme, topic or mood  , these are known as hybrid genre films.

example
mr and mrs smith
in format is a romance movie traditional "boy meets girl" and the setting suburbia aslso fits withthis, however it also has elements of a western, rival gangs fighting amongst each other. The iconography in the movie is more of an action thriller with guns, gadgets and brutality .

FILM GENRE
Categories into which films can be placed based on, plotline, binary characters, style , iconography etc
.
Film genre can determine whether a person does or does not go and see a movie download it or buy the dvd this makes it an increasingly important aspect of the film industry. Making a film in a specific genre creates specificity in the targeting of audience which in turn can increase revenue for a variety of reasons. Once a film is branded as a specific genre someone might go and see it because generally they like that genre, the producers can tailor the film they are creating to fit audience expectation so the filmgoers are not dissapointed and will buy into the movie and even the merchendise that is promoted around it.
Genres in film making have been critisised in the past as some people argue that the categorising of films devalues the art of film making. This can be validated to some extent , in its most brutal form splitting films into basic genre's (fantasy, horror, rom com action)  does make film less of an art form as binary plotlines are produced and films in some genre's become "samey" and the substance of the film is lessened .
This film "de ja vu" is however not always a bad thing .Often the audience buys into a film for the escapism from everyday life and knowing that the romantic comedy will end happily ever after or that the good guy wins out in an action film is a part of this   and creates audience satisfaction.Which is what producers aim for as a rule because , tailor making films for an audience makes more money.

In media this year i am going to produce a 5 minute short film and two auxilary tasks, a film poster and a radio advert of magazine article . exploring all of the concepts and techniques involved in film production and hopefully avoiding the pitfalls !
